Key Responsibilities:

  • This role requires daily, hands-on use of optical design and test tools — proficiency with Zemax OpticStudio (or equivalent) and direct experience with lab-based optical testing and characterization are required, not preferred.
  • Own design activities for lenses, windows, mirrors, and other optical components, including engineering requirements targets.specification (ERS) development, optical specification definition, and requirements flow-down from system-level performance
  • Develop and optimize designs for lenses, windows, mirrors, and other optical components using Zemax OpticStudio, CODE V, or equivalent optical design and simulation tools, including hands-on optimization, tolerancing, sensitivity and Monte Carlo analysis, performance analysis, and manufacturability assessment.
  • Lead design execution for lenses, windows, mirrors, and other optical components across in-house engineering, external optical design consultants, and vendors; provide technical direction and drive design convergence against requirements.
  • Review and approve optical design deliverables, including prescriptions, tolerance analyses, Monte Carlo results, drawings, and vendor design documentation.
  • Define and validate specifications and acceptance criteria for lenses, windows, mirrors, and other optical components.
  • Partner with optical component vendors and manufacturing teams to resolve design, fabrication, assembly, and performance issues, including failure analysis and mitigation plans.
  • Own lens and optical component designs end-to-end — from concept and prototype through qualification, new product shipping optical products at scale.introduction (NPI), and high-volume production — including manufacturing ramp, yield improvement, cost reduction, and sustaining engineering, with accountability for successfully
  • Plan and execute hands-on optical testing and characterization of lenses, windows, mirrors, and other optical components — measured performance with optical models and specifications.including MTF, wavefront error (WFE), distortion, relative illumination, boresight, and stray light measurements — correlating
  • Lead future-generation design efforts for lenses, windows, mirrors, and other optical components, including architecture studies, trade-off analyses, technology evaluation, and development of optical solutions for next-generation products.
  • Coordinate cross-functional efforts with system optics, mechanical, electrical, firmware, DSP, software, manufacturing, and supplier teams to ensure optical designs meet system-level performance and integration requirements.
  • Drive optical design reviews and communicate technical decisions, trade-offs, risks, and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate initiative by proposing and driving technical solutions to complex optical design and system challenges.
  • Develop creative and practical approaches that balance optical performance, manufacturability, cost, schedule, and product requirements.
  • Work independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
  • Develop analysis and automation workflows in Python or equivalent tools to support optical design, tolerance analysis, test correlation, and data analysis.
  • Analyze optical performance data and formulate root-cause hypotheses for issues such as aberrations, alignment sensitivity, stray light, ghosting, tolerance stack-up, and manufacturing variation.

Required Qualifications and Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's or Ph.D. with 3-5 years, or bachelor’s degree with +7 years of experience in Optical/Photonics Engineering, Physics, or a related field, with hands-on experience in lens or optical system design.
  • Strong fundamentals in geometrical and physical optics, imaging systems, aberration theory, and optical system engineering, with excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Experience defining lens requirements and specifications from system-level optical performance requirements.
  • Experience leading or technically managing optical design work performed by external consultants, lens suppliers, or manufacturing partners is highly desirable.
  • Experience with lens manufacturing processes, optical materials, coatings, mechanical interfaces, and design-for-manufacturing considerations.
  • Experience with optical tolerancing, sensitivity analysis, Monte Carlo analysis, and correlation between simulation and measured hardware performance.
  • Experience with optical system bring-up, debugging, and validation.
  • Experience developing next-generation lens concepts or conducting optical architecture and trade studies is a plus.

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Medical Insurance
  • Flexible vacation policy
  • Collaborative and dynamic work environment
  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge technology in a cross-functional team
